"Do you even recognize the portal type here, Kaili?" Miranda asked.

"It's a purple one," Kaili said confidently.

Miranda walked toward the portal, gazing at it. "It's a simple site-to-site portal. Any mage class can produce one... but anyone that conjured it, if not powerful enough to just leave it open and forget about it... will probably be maintaining it on one of its two ends. And you threw a rock through to the other end."

Kaili looked at Miranda with a puzzled expression. "But there's no one here maintaining it," she said.

Miranda nodded. "Yeah, that means they're on the other end. You're lucky these portals are soundproof."

"Should we go say hello?" Kaili asked.

Miranda sighed again. "I'll go in first. You stay here till I find out that it's safe."

"Okay!" Kaili replied enthusiastically.

Miranda stepped forward, then slowly passed through the portal. She felt Kaili tug on her arm playfully, but since she went in head-first, she couldn't hear if Kaili was speaking. On the other side of the portal, Miranda saw a dark room, lit up only by the light emanating from the portal. There was an altar on the far end of the room, built in to the wall much like a fireplace. On the right side of the room, but in between the portal and the altar, what appeared to be a coffin hung from the ceiling, suspended above an open trap door. Miranda noticed the room was empty, but was cautious about the coffin as she stepped out of the portal.

Kaili watched Miranda go through the portal, and waited impatiently.
