Rainbow Girl
Miranda's Story
Miranda's Story
"Miranda! Sarenda!" Nira called, pulling a roast out of the gas oven. "It's ready!"
"You know you're not gonna get a good reaction out of her like that." Nira's husband asserted.
"Hush yourself, Shino." Nira barked. "Who says we can't have a decent family dinner occasionally?"
Shino shrugged.
A young, dark purple-haired toddler wearing a frilly blue dress stamped in. "Me and Mommy can't eat in here today. We don't have time." she said, folding her arms and looking up at her grandma. "And my name is Glitter."
Nira set the roast down on the table, then looked down. "You may be the star of Gurnez's... circus, but you're still my granddaughter. You're an Auvi, whether you like it or not."
"Glitter! My name is Glitter!!!" the girl yelled, then stormed out of the room.
Nira sighed. "She's only four and she's already getting into this circus life..." she said, sighing. She then looked over at Shino, who already had most of the roast ate while she was looking away. She slapped his hand away. "Dammit you're a hog!!!"
Meanwhile, a young, dark blue-haired woman wearing nothing but a large, red bathrobe walked out of the ringmaster's trailer. She leaned against the trailer, sighing. Following her was a man, buttoning up his fancy red ringmaster outfit, with white stripes and gold trimming. "Better hurry up Rainbow, you're my first act." he whispered to her, as he walked past, going to the tent.
Glitter walked up to Rainbow, looking up. "Grammy was looking for you." she said.
"You're ready already?" Rainbow said, noticing Glitter was wearing her performance outfit. "Where's your wand?"
"You know I don't need it!" Glitter said smugly as she waved her sparkling hand in front of her.
"But the audience don't." Rainbow said, walking Glitter to their trailer. "You find it while I get ready, kay?"
"Okay..." Glitter pouted, then started walking reluctantly back to her family's trailer.
Later, on stage, in front of hundreds of people, the ringmaster walked out on stage. "GREETINGS, EVERYONE, AND WELCOME TO THE GREATEST SHOW ON ASTER!" he announced, as Rainbow peeked out from backstage. "I AM GURNEZ HARKEK, YOUR RINGMASTER FOR THIS EVENT!"
Rainbow withdrew her head, sitting down across from a boy wearing a blue and beige circus outfit. "Your uncle sounds enthusiastic this time."
"Heh. I'm surprised he had the time when he's always distracted by YOU." the boy snarked angrily."
"Now was that necessary, Lineth?" she said.
"Aren't you doing your act today?" Lineth asked.
"No, actually it's Glitter's first time by herself." she answered. "I'll be watching her closely though, just in case."
"Wow, really?" Lineth said. "My first solo wasn't till I was 6!"
"Is that envy I hear...?" Rainbow said.
"Nooo!" he barked, raising his fist at Rainbow.
"Calm down, I was just teasing." she said. "If it makes you feel any better, she really looks up to you. You're six years older than her, after all."
Lineth lowered his fist slowly. "Oh..."
As Rainbow faintly heard Gurnez calling Glitter out on stage, she stood up. "Sounds like Glitter is up first. You should come watch."
Lineth nodded, following Rainbow out.
After there show, in the ringmaster's trailer, Gurnez sat down, taking his cloak off to relax. Before he could finish his tired sigh, there was a knock at the door.
"Who in the world... come in!"
A youthful looking man with crimson-colored hair and a dark black cloak on opened the door, walking in. "Gurnez Harkek, current owner of the Harkek Family Circus, I presume?" the man asked.
"Who are you?" Gurnez asked, standing up.
The man bowed to Gurnez. "My name is Salori Lanoia. Perhaps you've heard of me."
"Salori Lanoia?!?" Gurnez responded in amazement. "THE Salori Lanoia?"
"The one and only."
"Oh... I apologize for the rudeness... please, have a seat."
"That won't be necessary." Salori stated. "I came to you for just one thing."
"Oh?" Gurnez asked. "And what would that be?"
"I was disappointed about not seeing a certain performer of yours on stage." Salori explained.
"Oh! You must be referring to Two-Eared Jeb! He actually retired last mo-"
"No, not him." Salori interrupted. "The eldest of your Rainbow Girls duo. I came to your Gorgin City show for her."
"Oh her!" Gurnez said. "She let Glitter perform solo this time, but she ain't quitting the act Don't worry, you'll see her next time."
"Actually, I wanted to offer you a business proposition."
"Awha...?" Gurnez said, confused. "What's that have to do with Rainbow?"
"As I understand it, the performers in this circus are treated as circus property. Correct?" Salori asked.
"That's one way of sayin' it, yeah..."
"Then allow me to post my offer to purchase Miss Rainbow from you."
"Ooooh no. I'm not getting rid of her, she's a hit!" Gurnez said.
"You do realize how much I can offer you..."
"It don't matter." Gurnez said. "She means a lot more to me than just a circus act. She's my daughter's mother, and-"
"How does... 8 billion Nepron sound?"
Gurnez looked away, cringing from the large offer. He felt disappointed that a man this famous wanted to take her away from him. "Sorry, I just can't part with her..."
"I see..." Salori said, as his eyes started glowing red. "That just won't do."
A few moments later, Rainbow walked out of the tent, walking back to the ringmaster's trailer. She looked over to see a young girl with bright pink hair wearing a frilly, burgundy dress sitting down on a chair right outside of the trailer. She walked up to the little girl. "Her there, what are you doing here?" she asked, smiling.
She waited for the girl to respond, but the girl didn't so much as to even look at Rainbow. "...so do you have a name?"
Just then, Salori came out of the ringmaster's trailer. He spotted Rainbow, then approached her. He stopped, then bowed to her. "Ah, 'Rainbow', is it? A pleasure to meet you in person."
"And you are...?" Rainbow asked.
"Just a fan who happened to see a lot of potential in you." Salori said. "I came to offer to put your talents to better use."
Just then, Glitter came out of the tent, wandering around cheerfully, a few feet behind Rainbow, within Salori's sight.
"...what are you saying?" Rainbow asked.
Salori looked back at Rainbow as Glitter skipped out of sight. "I'm saying, I just purchased you from Mister Harkek."
"...what?!?" Rainbow gasped.
"Circus life is no place for a talented young woman such as yourself." Salori said. "I hope there's no problem."
Rainbow looked away and paused. She then looked back at Salori. "Look, I appreciate the offer, but I can't leave my daughter."
"But my dear, this isn't negotiable." Salori said. He then slowly lifted his hand, waving it in front of Rainbow as she passed out. "Now then, let's get you to your new home, Miranda."
