Attempted Retaliation Saturday May 16th, 4646 at 8:19 AM in Oroeth Leaning out the window, looking around at the port, Yulla sighed, wondering how she got reduced to a mere town guard. She zoned out as the noise of the people working in the port eased, just enough to ignore completely.

"Damn that sun's bright," Nocturnian private Feldirok Vepur commented as he stood in the shadow of a quickly constructed guard post. It helped somewhat, but his sensitive Nocturnian eyes were still bothered by the glare. A low ranking soldier, he had the bad luck to get day duty standing guard just outside of town. day duty was bad enough for a Nocturnian back home when it was generally quiet, but here on Oroeth, a recently captured human town, he had to deal not only with the unrelenting burn of that accursed star, but the fact that humans actually traveled with it up.
It had only been 3 hours since he started his watch, but already nearly 2 dozen carts full of goods had passed though. It was his job to check them for contraband, though in this brightness he couldn't be bothered to do so in detail. A quick glance at their cargo was usually enough to find anything suspicious anyway. If he did he could give it a more thorough search. So that's all he did, a quick glance, then promptly marked them down and waved them through. Still, it had been quiet for the last few minutes.
He looked off in the distance to see if anyone else was coming. He saw a man walking towards the town. He was carrying something on his back, but he was still too far away to tell what. "Well at least the guy can't be carrying too much," Feldirok said as he shrugged his shoulders.

Yulla yawned. "Almost time for another nap, I guess..."

As the traveler approached the checkpoint, Feldirok called out to him. "This town is now under Nocturnian jurisdiction. If you wish to enter you'll need to be searched for contraband." He gestured to a sign next to him. "This shows what's contraband. Allowances will be made for anything on the list you may have been unaware of due to new regulations. Contraband may be surrendered without charge. If you don't do so and I discover it upon search, you will be arrested."

Yulla watched out the window as she stared at a pair of Nocturnian guards pace back and forth outside the building. Yulla closed her eyes, trying to doze off.

Just then Feldirok heard a noise behind him. He started to turn to look, when he was grabbed from behind, a hand covered his mouth preventing him from calling out for help and an arm wrapped tightly around his neck. Before knew it, Feldirok was wrestled to the ground, a large human male holding him down with his body weight.
"Got'em, boss," the human said. "Ambush worked like ya said, 'e didn't even notice. What should I do with 'em. Kill 'em, or tie 'em up fer some questionin'?"

After a few minutes, Yulla opened her eyes again, looking out the window. She noticed the guards she had been watching were gone. She lifted her head up. "That's strange..."

A guard burst into Yulla's office, clearly panicked. "Commander! It's an emergency!" He exclaimed. "We're under attack!"

"Already?" the guard replied. "You were expecting an attack?"
Three Nocturnian soldiers quietly made their way through a back alley. Their fellow soldiers were engaged in combat against some unknown humans in the street ahead. Coming this way would allow them to get behind the humans. "Let's go," The leader of this tiny band said. The three of them began to move out, intending to charge. However, several humans wielding heavy clubs jumped on them from above. They bashed the soldiers over the head, smashing through their thin helmets. One Nocturnian lay dead. A second was knocked unconscious, his skull fractured but still alive. The third was luckier for the time being. The blow from above only grazed his head. He was dizzy from the force of the blow, but alive and conscious. Still, they're was no way he could fight like that, so he lied on the ground, not moving, hoping his attackers would think he was dead for now, at least until the ground stopped moving.
